The greatest of escapes

great escape

Today I feel a bit like Steve Mcqueen in the yet to be made directors cut of The Great Escape. For most of 2009 I have been suffering with a most debilitating pain in my lower back and left leg which was caused by a prolapsed disc. Yesterday I was scheduled to have an operation on my spine to remove a the disc and ‘decompress’ some nerve damage.

However, about a month ago I began to feel that the pain was diminishing a little which was a relief. However, I was still keen to have the disc removed. Fast forward to one week ago I realised that I was completely pain free whilst I was on a business trip in London. I called my surgeon and explained that circumstances had changed and he advised to come into hospital expecting to have the operation but he would examine me and ‘decide on the day’. Yesterday, he chose not to operate as he could see that there had been considerable improvement.

We’re not sure if the pain will return. A friend of mine said “It’s a smart spine that straightens up when someone waves a scalpel at it”. So, now I have an appointment scheduled with the surgeon just before Christmas. If the pain comes back then I’ll be revving up the engine to leap that last fence again and will be having the operation in January 2010.

I’m feeling pretty lucky right now. I took Yasmin and Zak out this morning for a run around the heath on one of the most beautiful Autumn days ever. I’ll never take my health for granted again.

Great news, Nicko! Glad to hear that you’re feeling better and didn’t have to get the surgery after all.

Nothing like a second chance, eh? :)
